26 Jun

Searching for the right foundation may prove to be a rather stressful experience and more often than not, the foundation people do end up with aren’t completely satisfactory and in some cases people just settle for something they think  ‘will do’ not knowing that there are better things out there for them.

Luckily for you, you don’t have to be as unfortunate as others! you get to have your foundation especially picked out to suit your needs.
How?
With the help of Poppy, a personalised foundation search tool used to find the perfect foundation for your skin exclusively! I know they say ‘when something is too good to be true it’s probably not’,well I kid you not , this time around  it’s more than just true, it’s a dream come true! visit www.beauty.ps and see for yourself.
On the first page of this website a cute pink button that reads ‘let’s begin’ will tempt you to click it.
Once you finally give in to this temptation (which you will) , you will be asked to enter your name and email address before the magic begins…..

As you can see, Poppy welcomes you in a rather sophisticated manner, she will then ask you a series of questions regarding your skin tones, your skin type and what kind of coverage you’re looking for.
In the end, a summary of your details will be shown to you. This info is needed in order to maximize Poppy’s search (as well as confirming the info you entered, you could always go back if you have to change something)
By letting the expert know which foundations you’ve already tried and by rating these foundations, Poppy will be in a better position to pick out the perfect one!
After completing these simple steps, you will then be given the names of the recommended foundations for you, here’s a look at mine:

These were the lucky three that made it to the finish line for me, I tried a sample of them and found each to be great,  but the gold medal would definitely have to go to Laura Mercier. It is by far my favorite and I don’t see myself buying any other foundation after this.
Now with the debs coming up, this would be a great tool to use to help you achieve that flawless Kim Kardashian  finish! Introduce yourself to Poppy and be the belle of the ball!
For those of you who will try this out, feel free to tweet me your results here, would love to know how you get on!
Thanks for reading this post.

‘Highlighting attracts and contouring detracts’

20 Jun

Those are the cardinal rules to highlighting and contouring, something that anybody who has even the slightest interest in makeup should know so if you’re going to know anything about makeup, let it be this….

Do you ever wonder how Tyra Banks has a nose that looks so perfectly narrow, or how Kim K has those perfectly shaped cheekbones? Well believe you me, it’s not all natural and let me assure you that this look can be achieved by everyone and anyone with this simple little ‘trick’ called highlighting and contouring.

So what exactly is highlighting and contouring??
It’s all about bringing dimension and glow to the face! With the highlighting you bring out your features and draw attention to certain areas while the contouring does the opposite by diminishes other areas, almost like a shadow effect.
So what do you need:
1. Highlighters – Mac prep + prime highlighter is great (just under 30E)
 2.Contours – E.L.F Contouring Blush & Bronzer (cheap and cheerful! $3)
3.Foundation –  the usual (it should match your skin tone)
4.Setting powder – optional but Laura Mercier do a great one for abou 30E)
Note:
Always moisturize your face before applying any make up! You don’t want your face to appear dry….

Kim K revealed…..

-Now that you know what you need, first start with applying the highlighter in the V area of your forehead, down your nose, under the eyes, cheekbones, on your brow line and chin as pictured above.
-Using a shade much darker than usual, contour under the cheekbones, on the temple, near the hair line, your jawline and contour the sides of the nose as well to make it appear thinner.
Note: if you look a bit scary after this, you’re on the right track!
-Now with a foundation that matches your skin tone blend everything in with a large brush (MAC #187 ) the lines should fade away gradually, eventually you see dimension just  blend blend blend!
If you use a setting powder, apply lightly to the face but generally, after this 3 step process you should have a beautifully defined , sculpted, yet NATURAL look!
This process takes the longest in my makeup application so if you spend over an hour on your face and you’re NOT highlighting and contouring, then I really don’t know what you’re doing!
What takes you the longest to complete in your makeup application process?

Don’t be a victim of dry lips……

12 Jun

E4.50 in McCabes Pharmacy

Dry lips have never been a huge problem for me growing up, I mean let’s face it, what are the chances of someone with oily skin actually ending up with dry lips as well? Life isn’t that bad! But, (there’s always a but) I did go through a stage in my life where I was mad about using Vaseline’s pocket size lip balm. I thought their packaging was cute,  I thought it was great that I could choose from a range of colors and their scents were absolutely gorgeous!  sounds like heaven right?

Far from it!

This so called ‘Lip Therapy’ balm was actually the cause of my dry lips because from the moment I started using it, I found my lips getting a lot drier than usual.

So that’s when I did some research and discovered that petroleum jelly (the main ingredient in Vaseline) does not moisturize your lips (or any part of your body for that matter) what it does is, it creates a barrier over your skin that protects it from losing moisture and although I’m grateful for that, this product still didn’t tick all the boxes, it just wasn’t enough!

I then decided to be a bit daring by going for something I wouldn’t normally go for: Carmex lip balm and that was by far the best decision I have ever made (I’m speaking for my lips here!)

This product ‘soothes, relieves and moisturizes’  and thanks to the natural moisturizers it contains i.e cocoa butter and lanolin, you will have healthy looking lips in no time! Because it’s such a great moisturizer, it doesn’t need to be put on as often as others. I tend to use mine right after the shower and then again two or three later on in the day (sometimes even more because of that tingly feeling you get from it! very cool and refreshing!)

This product comes in either a jar or a tube, you also have a few flavors to choose from. I’ve somehow gotten used to the smell of the original one, but if you can’t, then you could always go for the cherry/strawberry flavor (best part is, they contain SPF 15!!)

Have you used any of these products before? If not, What’s your go-to lip balm?

Out with the old and in with the new: When to ditch your old products….

3 Jun

It’s funny how people jump so quickly to throw out foods that have past their due date, but when it comes to makeup products, they suddenly become hoarders and cling to them as if these products were irreplaceable!  Believe it or not, the effect of using makeup products past their shelf life could be a lot more damaging than eating bread that’s a day old (yuk!)

Throwing out half-used products can prove to be quite upsetting, but what would be more upsetting is the eye infection you could get from using mascara which has been nesting under a pile of even older makeup products! So even if you were only spoiling yourself with a YSL mascara, hope to God that you will make use of it because you’ll be saying your goodbyes a lot sooner than you’d like!

Unfortunately, cosmetics aren’t required to have an expiration date on their packaging so it’s up to you  to know when you’ve opened certain products. If your memory isn’t the best you could always use expiration-date stickers to keep track but if you want to be a bit courageous and rely on your memory, here is a guideline for when you should start saying your goodbyes:

Foundation (liquids & creams), concealer &  powder : 2 years max

Lipstick, lip & eye pencils: 12- 18 months max

Mascara: 3 – 6 months

Eye cream: 6 months

Face cream: 2 years

Sun screen: 2 years

Remember that these are just guidelines, use a bit of common sense if you must! You wouldn’t use milk that smelt funky, so why use a cream that seems a bit odd?

Hope you’ve enjoyed my post, it’s probably one of the shortest I have! 🙂
